Wildhorse Lake from the Rim

Wildhorse Lake from the Rim

6/27/2020: We did both Steens Summit and the rim of Wildhorse Lake. Steens Summit is only about a mile roundtrip and the Wildhorse Lake is about 2.5 miles roundtrip. However, we did not do the actual Wildhorse Lake hike because my hiking buddy is not fond of rocky scrambles and there is a steep scramble at the beginning of Wildhorse Trail. I don’t like for her to do anything she is not comfortable with, so we opted for a walk along the rim of Wildhorse Lake canyon. I think it was probably just as beautiful, if not more so than the official Wildhorse hike. There are beautiful views and the combined Steens Summit/Wildhorse Lake Rim hike add up to five ❤️.

This report is for the combo of the Steens Summit and Wildhorse Lake Rim hikes.

Marg’s Notes: Steens Mountain Summit

Drove back up to the summit parking lot in the morning and walked ½ mile to the Summit. Beautiful views…but lots of cell towers! ~10,000 feet. Very windy, but cooler! We were going to go on Wildhorse Lake Trail, but it was very steep, so we saw another trail that headed west along the ridge! Again, it was very windy! Very nice views. It was rocky, but we had our walking poles. We were able to find shelter behind some big rocks. Very nice. Rod startled a bat while taking pictures! After lunch we continued on a bit, but kind of ran out of trail, so we retraced our steps & headed back to camp. It was hot down there! Sat by the river for Happy Hour. We had changed campsites in the morning! Moved across the road to be by the river. As we were leaving our happy hour spot, Rod saw a rattlesnake very close to where we had been sitting! Went to bed when the skeeters came out.

Leftovers.
